Abstract The University of Texas Southwestern Medicanl Center (UTSW) is one of the key members in University of Texas system. In biomedical sc ience field, it has more Nobel laureates than National Institute of Health(NIH),Harvard Medical School and Stanford Medical School.
Introduction The University of Texas Southwestern Medicanl Center (UTSW) is located in Dallas, Texas with a 2310-acre campus and one of the key members in University of Texas system. Founded in 1943 as a private hospital, UT Southwestern is one of the most famous biological science institute in the United Sates now. UT Southwestern has four affiliated hospitals including Parkland Memorial Hospital,Children's Health, Zale Lipshy University Hospital and William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital. William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital is a $800 million facility opened to the public on December 6th, 2015 to enhance the experience of the patients and their families. The medical Center contains three degree-granting institutions: UT Southwestern Medical School, UT Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and UT Southwestern School of Health Professions. UT Southwestern has total of six Nobel laureates (1985 Michael Brown/Joseph Goldestein, 1988 Johann Deisenhofer, 1994 Alfred Gilman, 2004 Linda Buck, 2011 Bruce Beutler,2013 Thomas Sudhof), four of which remain active at the university. In biomedical science field, it has more Nobel laureates than National Institute of Health(NIH),Harvard Medical School and Stanford Medical School. In addition, UT Southwestern has 21 members of National Academy of Sciences(NAS) and 12 members of Howard Hughes Medical Istitute(HHMI).
Medical Imaging Advanced Imaging Research Center The Advanced Imaging Research Center (AIRC) was established in September 2005 and has total of 7 MR scanners for research purpose including 4 human 3T (3 Philips,1 GE), 1 human 7T, 1 animal 7T and 1 animal 9.4T. Recently, it is equipped with morden PET/CT animal scanners and a cyclotron facility for generating imaging isotopes. Lead by Dr. Dean Sherry and Dr. Craig Malloy, AIRC is a collaboration between UT Southwestern Medical Center and other North Texas institutions to facilitate research in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), and translation of discoveries into clinical practice. Chemist Dean Sherry, physician Craig Malloy collaberate with Ralph Deberardinis who is a biologist and physician to explore the pyruvate metabolism. Toge†her with physicist Dr. Changho Choi and neuroncologist Dr. Elizabeth Maher, they published a paper in Nature Medicine about the in vivo detection of 2-hydroxyglutarate(2HG) in gliomas with MRS(Choi et al, Nat Med 18: 624-629 (2012)). In the meantime, together with chemist Matthew Merritt's expertise in carbon 13 NMR, they published high impact papers on the cancer metabolism in several journals(Merritt et al, PNAS USA 104:19773-7 (2007)). Chinese scholars Xiankai Sun and Fangyu Peng work together in PET/SPECT probe development. Xiankai Sun is also the director of Cyclotron and Radiochemistry program in UTSW. Steve Jiang, a Chinese professor who came to UTSW recently, published his works about GPU radiation therapy dose simulation in medical physics and electrical engineering journals(Thomas Bortfeld et al, Phys. Med. Biol. 47:2203(2002)). As the chief of division of Medical Physics and Engineering in UTSW, he has participated in the construction of the Heavy Ion Radiation Therapy Center in UTSW which is the first of such center in the United States. Heavy ion radiation therapy would significantly improve the efficiency of radiation therapy. Right now, AIRC is seeking candidates for multiple faculty positions in neuroimaging research http://www.ismrm.org/jobs/j05429.pdf (http://www.ismrm.org/jobs/j05429.pdf). Research Areas 1. Inversiting Metabolism by MRI Dean Sherry, Craig Malloy 2. MR contrast agent for paraCEST and Zn - Dean Sherry 3. CEST Dean Sherry 4. Liver metabolism - Shawn Burgess, Jeffrey Browning 5. MR Imaging with Hyperpolarization- Zoltan Kovacs, Matthew Merritt 6. In vivo Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy- Changho Choi, Jimin Ren 7. PET/SPECT - Xiankai Sun, Fangyu Peng 8. GPU radiation therapy dose simulation Steve Jiang, Jia Xun 9. Heavy ion radiation therapy Steve Jiang 10. Parallel imaging and compressed sensing - Jiangxiong Wang
Author's Biography Zhongxu An is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and works as a research assistant in the Advanced Imaging Research Center under the guidance of Dr. Changho Choi.
